Types of CAD Design

Computer-aided design can be separated into two different types: 2-Dimensional and 3-Dimentional, each answering different needs, but both producing the required design that can be printed in professional printers.


2-Dimensional CAD is layout design software, usually applied to vector-based layouts. It was developed in the early 1970s and it forged the way for CAD software. Engineering companies needed software that would help with repetitive drawing requirements, and 2D CAD’s use of basic shapes like rectangles, lines, circles, and triangles assisted in making the drawings.

It is often used for overhead views of blueprints and floor plants, with vector graphics that can be scaled to the necessary sizes. It also contains sketches and mock-ups commonly used in the first stages of the design process.


With advances in technology, 3D CAD followed the previous 2D version. It is suitable for more advanced computers with better graphic displays, and as such it became popular software for designers. It allows for images to be created and manipulated in all three axes: X, Y, and Z. With 3D CAD you can view isometrics and perspectives from any angle, with the use of its enhanced visual ability.

This more advanced software can be used to create complex shapes, capable of being rotated and enlarged. The initial shape of the object is built, and the colours and gradients can be added after.

This software can be classified in three other different models:

Surface models

These models are very realistic, joining 3D surfaces to put together images. Because there is no background to the images, they have a clearer surface that makes for an easier manipulation.

Solid models

These useful models add density, volume, and weight to designs to make them closer to physical objects. This property of solid models makes them useful in engineering designs.

Wire-frame models

These less popular models generate skeleton models of images with lines and arcs; the wire-like appearance and the visible background give them their name of wire-frame models.
